Dr. Sonja Berg
As a research associate at the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy at the University of Cologne, I am conducting research within the framework of SPP-funded projects with focus on ice sheet-climate interactions in Antarctica. In this context, I investigate lacustrine, terrestrial, marine and avian sedimentary archives from of ice-free coastal sites and the near shore marine environment in East Antarctica to reconstruct past ice sheet and environmental changes and possible climatic drivers. For my PhD project at the University of Cologne I first visited Antarctica in 2007 within the scope of an expediton of RV Polarstern. I am currently involved in a series of expeditions to East Antarctica, which are part of the interdisciplinary research programme EASI (East Antarctic ice sheet instabilities).
