Professor Tilmann Harder
As a marine chemist and chemical ecologist at the University of Bremen and at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research I am interested in chemically mediated processes in pelagic phytoplankton communities. Our work aims at a chemical understanding of microalgae - bacteria interactions in polar regions. Through the chemical analysis of the exchanged or released substances, we provide information on the ecological functioning of microalgae. This includes the qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis of known, functionally defined substances as well as the descriptive analysis of complex substance spectra of unknown dissolved substances.
