M.Sc. Desiree Juchem studied the survival of diatoms from Antarctica in the polar night for her Master thesis, looking at ecophysiological, biochemical, and cell biological parameters. The data show massive depletion of lipid-containing reserve substances and chloroplasts during dark incubation, contributing to maintenance metabolism. The results have now been published in the journal Frontiers in Microbiology.
