In September 2024, the Senate of the German Research Foundation (DFG) approved the infrastructure priority programme “Research Vessels” (SPP 2520), to run from 2026 to 2031.
The aim is to strengthen ship-based research infrastructure and to support interdisciplinary marine research — including participation by university groups.
Now, the second call is open: proposals may be submitted in English until 5 December 2025.
Projects may run up to three years, starting in January 2027 or later.
Key thematic areas include:
Oceans under climate change
Ocean interfaces & biogeochemical cycles
Ocean–lithosphere dynamics
Ocean–biosphere interactions
Ocean-based new technologies & innovation
A coordination workshop is scheduled for 11–12 May 2026 at the University of Hamburg — participation is strongly encouraged.
