Workshop on East Antarctic Ice Sheet Instabilities (EASI) in Cologne
The EASI program addresses the reconstruction and better understanding of East Antarctic Ice Sheet Instabilities. In 2021/22 and 2023/24 three R.V. Polarstern expeditions were carried out (PS128, EASI-1; PS140, EASI-2; PS141, EASI-3) by multidisciplinary expedition teams to collect a wide range of new data and samples to investigate the state and history of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, including its interaction with changes in Southern Ocean circulation and the thresholds and triggering mechanisms for its instabilities. The EASI concept is the integration of terrestrial, near-shore and open marine data in order to enhance our understanding of ice-land-ocean-climate interactions on different spatial and temporal scales.
On the 10 and 11 October 2025 the second EASI workshop was held at the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy, University of Cologne, to inform about the results and progress of the individual EASI projects, some of which are funded in the SPP 1158. In the hybrid format 41 participants from institutions in Germany, The Netherlands and Australia discussed upcoming publications and potential future research.
